Brown-Delaware Expressway

In 1974 a 3 lane road was carved through what is now the Historic West Eighth Street and West Central Historic Districts for "better downtown traffic flow". The construction of this thoroughfare caused quite a storm within the city and helped move the downtown residents to diligently work toward the creation of our two Historic Districts. Delaware Street and Brown Street were combined from West 6th St. to West 14th St. by cutting down trees, demolishing homes, and taking away resident's lawns. The articles included here were published in the Anderson Papers of the time. |

The
expressway runs within a few feet of the Delaware Court Apartments
which are wonderfully maintained today. The pile of debris pictured
is all that is left of 202 West 10th Street.
The city paid $82,500 for this property in order to tear it down
- a huge sum at the time. |
